If the words spoke, they would sound angry, bitter, and sad. “I can’t believe the way the network has treated him,” Anita Klaussen, the wife of now former NBC tennis analyst “Bud” Collins wrote me in an email. “Everyone says the broadcast just aren’t the same without “Bud” around.” That was last year. Trust me when I say, the news of “Bud” Collins dismissal from NBC might have been upsetting. But, it was hardly surprising.

The inevitable is now official, after 35 years of covering, talking, screaming, analyzing and glowing at Wimbledon for NBC Television; Arthur “Bud” Collins is gone. Let go! Not offered another contract! Fired or more fittingly, given the pink slip! Yes, “Bud” Collins was more than wild, day glow pants, thick bow ties, and wacky nicknames. He was tennis personified, passionate, entertaining and smart.

As a cub reporter at the now defunct Boston Herald in the 1950’s, he was given a bottom of the barrel assignment – covering the U.S. Doubles Championship from Longwood Cricket Club. To his editor, it was like being sent to Siberia. Even if the balls were frozen solid, Collins was in heaven. “I loved tennis,” he told me once. “I used to listen to a guy name Lev Richards call tournaments on radio as a kid. We had courts in our neighborhood growing up in Ohio and we played all the time. I couldn’t get enough of it.”

Tennis at that point in history, was a sport of snobby rich kids and country club hob nobbers not patient enough to hold a five iron. Nevertheless, it did have its characters dating back to the Bill Tildens and Pancho Gonzalezes of the world. Most, however, didn’t care, especially network television producers airing only a few hours a year. That was until “Bud” Collins came along. Looking to fill airtime in 1963, flagship PBS TV station WGBH decided to broadcast, on a tape delay bases, the U.S. Doubles Championships. “They did it on a whim,” remembers Collins. “They asked me if I wanted to do it, I said why not. No one’s going to watch anyway.” He was wrong. Ratings were huge and steady over the next few summers. Affiliates from LA to DC picked up the telecasts. Viewers looked forward to the wild comments and verbal dexterity from Collins.

Viewers also learned that “Bud” Collins was more than just tennis. He was a learned man, aware of the world around him, a reporter, a writer, a thinker at heart. After Arthur Ashe won the U.S. Amateurs in 1968, Collins interviewed the champion and discussed topics such as Vietnam and race relations uninterrupted for nearly an hour. Soon, Jack Dalton of CBS called begging Collins to join their coverage of the U.S. Open at Forest Hills. Four years later, NBC took him to London and their Wimbledon coverage. Working three networks simultaneously, he was the face and voice of tennis in America. In the end, his bosses gave him an ultimatum, choose one, you can’t do them all. He went with NBC, and the rest, as they say, is history. The game was booming, filled with new brash stars, “Bud” Collins among them trumpeting the virtues of the great lawn game called tennis, now excusable to all. And whatever popularity tennis has today, it owes a great deal to Mr. Collins.

I must admit this does sound like a eulogy. “Bud” Collins is not dead. At 78 years old, he possesses more youthful spirit than a room full of college freshman at a frat party. Still, a presence has died, lost and gone forever. The sports we love so much, outside of a few rare exceptions, is never about the broadcasters. It is about the players, the athletes who bare the brunt of the attention. Wimbledon fans will tune in next year to see if Roger Federer can win a sixth title. And even if Federer is not playing, they, we, us will watch, no matter who is playing, no matter who is broadcasting the match. Because, tragically, what the firing of “Bud” Collins under lines the most is that sports, almost always is never about people.

Oh, I liked "Bulls Eye" Jim. Sadly, I won't be talking with him for a completely different reason.

Yes, we usually like our sports heroes a little rough around the edges.
